Plea deal discussed in fugitive siblings case (AP)

WALSENBURG, Colo. ? Attorneys in Colorado discussed a possible plea deal on Monday for two brothers accused in a series of crimes in several states.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported that Ryan Dougherty (DOCK-er-tee) and Dylan Stanley-Dougherty were granted a stay in proceedings until Jan. 30 so that federal and Florida prosecutors can decide what they want to do in the case.

The brothers ? and their sister ? face five counts each in Colorado of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and other felony charges related to a high speed chase and what authorities say was a shootout before their capture Aug. 10.

The sister, Lee Grace Dougherty, pleaded not guilty last month. Her trial is set for Feb. 21.

Ryan, 21, Dylan, 26, and Lee Grace, 29, are accused of shooting at a police officer in Florida and robbing a bank in Georgia. They also are suspected of two car thefts in Utah.

Judge Claude Appel on Monday ordered separate trials for the siblings, each of whom is being held in lieu of $1.25 million bail at the Huerfano County Jail.

Attempted murder, the more serious of the Colorado charges, carries a sentence of up to 12 years in prison, but that could be increased to 48 years if it's found to be a crime of violence under Colorado law, according to Pueblo County District Attorney Bill Thiebaut.

The Doughertys are accused of firing an AK-47 at pursuing officers before running over spike strips, blowing a tire, rolling their vehicle and crashing into a guardrail. No officers were hurt. Lee Grace Dougherty was shot in the leg after getting out of the crashed vehicle and aiming a gun at an officer, authorities said.

"I deserved to get shot," she said, according to an arrest affidavit.

According to the affidavit, when asked about gunfire heard during the chase, Lee Grace Dougherty said the siblings weren't trying to hurt anyone and just wanted officers to get back.

The three are accused of robbing a Valdosta, Ga., bank and firing on a police officer in Zephyrhills, near Tampa in central Florida. The officer was chasing their car when one of the suspects began shooting at his police cruiser, disabling it, the FBI said.

A police detective has testified in Colorado that Ryan Dougherty told him the crime spree was hatched the day after he was sentenced to register as a sex offender. Ryan Dougherty allegedly said the trio planned to rob a bank in Georgia and use the money to flee to Mexico.

GOP 2012 candidates walk tightrope on immigration (AP)

AMHERST, N.H. ? Republican candidates for president are tying themselves in knots over immigration.

Newt Gingrich has called for a "humane" approach but has been defending that stance from attack by his opponents since he took it. On Monday, he endorsed a South Carolina measure allowing police to demand a person's immigration status during a traffic stop.

Rick Perry signed legislation in Texas allowing in-state tuition to children of illegal immigrants. But he campaigned in New Hampshire Tuesday with hard--line Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio (ar-PEYE'-oh) to ease concerns.

Mitt Romney takes a tough stance. But during his 2008 campaign he endorsed allowing some illegal immigrants to stay in the country.

Does it matter to voters? Many in early-nominating states say the economy trumps immigration as an important issue.

Environment and diet leave their prints on the heart

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2011) ? A University of Cambridge study, which set out to investigate DNA methylation in the human heart and the "missing link" between our lifestyle and our health, has now mapped the link in detail across the entire human genome.

The new data collected greatly benefits a field that is still in its scientific infancy and is a significant leap ahead of where the researchers were, even 18 months ago.

Researcher Roger Foo explains: "By going wider and scanning the genome in greater detail this time -- we now have a clear picture of the 'fingerprint' of the missing link, where and how epigenetics in heart failure may be changed and the parts of the genome where diet or environment or other external factors may affect outcomes."

The study originally began investigating the differences in DNA methylation found in the human heart. Researchers compared data from a small number of people with end-stage cardiomyopathy who were undergoing heart transplantation, and the healthy hearts of age-matched victims of road traffic accidents.

DNA methylation leaves indicators, or "marks," on the genome and there is evidence that these "marks" are strongly influenced by external factors such as the environment and diet. The researchers have found that this process is different in diseased and normal hearts. Linking all these things together suggest this may be the "missing link" between environmental factors and heart failure.

The findings deepen our understanding of the genetic changes that can lead to heart disease and how these can be influenced by our diet and our environment. The findings can potentially open new ways of identifying, managing and treating heart disease.

The DNA that makes up our genes is made up of four "bases" or nucleotides -- cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymie, often abbreviated to C, G, A and T. DNA methylation is the addition of a methyl group (CH3) to cytosine.

When added to cytosine, the methyl group looks different and is recognised differently by proteins, altering how the gene is expressed i.e. turned on or off.

DNA methylation is a crucial part of normal development, allowing different cells to become different tissues despite having the same genes. As well as happening during development, DNA methylation continues throughout our lives in a response to environmental and dietary changes which can lead to disease.

As a result of the study, Foo likens DNA methylation to a fifth nucleotide: "We often think of DNA as being composed of four nucleotides. Now, we are beginning to think there is a fifth -- the methylated C."

Foo also alludes to what the future holds for the study: "?and more recent basic studies now show us that our genome has even got 6th, 7th and 8th nucleotides? in the form of further modifications of cytosines. These are hydroxy-methyl-Cytosine, formylCytosine and carboxylCytosine = hmC, fC and caC! These make up an amazing shift in the paradigm?"

As in most studies, as one question is resolved, another series of mysteries form in its place. The study shows that we are still on the frontier of epigenetics and only just beginning to understand the link between the life we lead and the body we have.

Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket

We're still not seeing it on AT&T's product page, but Samsung most certainly does have a white version of the Galaxy S II Skyrocket waiting in the wings, for those of you who are into that sort of things. Specs look to be identical to the black Skyrocket, save for the shell. Keep an eye out for this one to be available at some point, we reckon.

The art of stabilizing entangled spaghetti-like materials

Monday, November 28, 2011

Gene therapy can only be effective if delivered by a stable complex molecule. Now, scientists have determined the conditions that would stabilise complex molecular structures that are subject to inherent attractions and repulsions triggered by electric charges at the surfaces of the molecules, in a study about to be published in EPJ E?, by Valentina Mengarelli and her colleagues from the Solid State Physics Laboratory at the Paris-Sud University in Orsay, France, in collaboration with Paris 7 and ?vry Universities scientists.

The authors studied soluble complexes made of negatively charged DNA or another negatively charged polymer ? polystyrene-sulfonate (PSSNa) ? and a so-called condensation agent, which is a negatively charged polymer, known as linear polyethyleneimine (PEI). PEI participates in the condensation process by tying onto a molecule such as DNA, like tangled hair, to form an overall positively charged DNA/polymer complex structure.

Previous research focused mainly on non-soluble complexes, while the few attempts at focusing on soluble complexes dealt either with smaller polymers or those with a weaker electric charge, which may therefore be easier to stabilise.

The French team thus confirmed experimentally that the complexation process does not depend on the rigidity of the original molecule, be it DNA or PSSNa, but on the positive/negative electric charge ratio and on the polymer concentrations. It is the interactions between electrically charged parts within the complex that govern its properties. When the condensation agent is in excess, the positively charged complex is then attracted to negatively charged biological cell membranes. This could be used to deliver the DNA into a targeted cell nucleus as part of gene therapy treatment.

Future work will focus on using long DNA molecules and novel polymers to form complexes of controlled size and electric charge for gene therapy.

Samsung DoubleTime (AT&T)

The Samsung DoubleTime ($49.99 with contract) has a hidden surprise inside: a full QWERTY keyboard with a secondary display, turning it into a micro-laptop. Unfortunately, it doesn't deliver the performance to go with its ambitious look. Even if you absolutely need a keyboard, you can find a better smartphone?on AT&T than the DoubleTime.

Design, Screen, and Keyboard
The DoubleTime measures 4.5 by 2.5 by .6 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.2 ounces. Made entirely of white plastic, it feels solid, if a bit low-end. The 3.2-inch external display is 320-by-480 pixel resolution, which is starting to look a bit grainy in comparison to the higher-resolution displays that can be found on many new devices. The glass capacitive touch screen is bright and suitably responsive, and there are four physical function keys below the screen.

Unlike many keyboarded phones, which slide to reveal a physical QWERTY keyboard, the DoubleTime flips open to reveal a keyboard and secondary screen. The keyboard itself is pretty good, with four rows of well spaced, large keys. Above the keyboard are four function keys, since you don't have access to the ones on the front of the phone. The keys are a bit flat, but you grow used to typing on typing on them quickly.

The second touch screen is the same as size and resolution as the primary screen. The problem is, it's extremely awkward to interact with. The screen is set back too far, and angled so it's much less pleasant to use than a phone that features just one screen and a slide-out keyboard, like the Samsung Captivate Glide?($149.99, 4 stars). And it's not like the second screen doubles your productivity. When the keyboard is open the primary screen goes black.

Call Quality, OS, and Apps
The DoubleTime is a tri-band HSPA 7.2 3G (850/1900/2100 MHz) and quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It functions as a mobile hotspot to provide wireless access to up to five different devices with the appropriate service plan.

Reception is average, and call quality is just OK. Voices sound clear and understandable in the phone's earpiece, but volume is extremely low. The speakerphone is just loud enough to use outdoors, but voices sound somewhat distorted. Calls made with the phone feature good noise cancellation, but voices are thin. Calls sounded much better through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and voice dialing worked well. Battery life was good, at 8 hours 31 minutes of talk time. But overall this is a phone for typing, not talking on.

The DoubleTime is powered by a 600MHz Qualcomm S1 CPU and runs Android 2.2.2 (Froyo). Now that Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) has finally landed, that places this device two steps behind the current generation. That endangers the DoubleTime's compatibility with new apps and exiles it from the latest features.

That 600MHz processor is growing long in the tooth as well. Though once a staple of midrange Android phones, it lags behind new devices. Though the DoubleTime benchmarked on par with other low-end Android phones, you can feel a lag in performance even when swiping through home screens.

Norwegian mass murderer Breivik insane, may avoid jail (Reuters)

OSLO (Reuters) ? Court-appointed psychiatrists have concluded that Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik is criminally insane, a prosecutor said on Tuesday, meaning he may be committed to a psychiatric institution indefinitely rather than sent to jail.

Breivik killed 77 people in July by bombing central Oslo and then gunning down dozens of mostly teenagers at a summer camp for the ruling Labour Party's youth wing.

"The conclusion is ... is that he is insane," prosecutor Svein Holden told a news conference. "He lives in his own delusional universe and his thoughts and acts are governed by this universe."

If the court accepts the psychiatrists' conclusions, the anti-immigration militant could be held as long as he poses a threat to society and may be released if found to be healthy.

Norwegian courts can challenge psychiatric evaluations or order new tests but it is rare for them to reject such a professional opinion.

If the evaluation is upheld, Breivik would not be put on criminal trial but would face a court hearing to rule on his criminal insanity and the length of his commitment to a psychiatric institution.

Breivik could then face similar hearings periodically to determine if he needs to remain committed, and could be held for life if he remained a threat.

Holden said Breivik had developed paranoid schizophrenia and was psychotic at the time of the attacks, and that his condition was persisting.

Iran says could target Turkey missile shield (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran could target installations in Turkey that are part of a planned NATO missile shield in any future conflict, a senior military official said on Saturday, upping the rhetoric against its neighbor with whom relations have soured in recent months.

"We are ready to attack NATO's missile shield in Turkey if we face a threat and then we will follow other aims," the semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace division, as saying.

Tehran has made clear its displeasure at Turkey's agreement in September to deploy a NATO missile early warning system which it sees as a U.S. ploy to protect Israel from any counter-attack should the Jewish state target Iran's nuclear facilities.

Once warm relations between Iran and Turkey have been strained this year due to the missile shield and Ankara's outspoken criticism of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's violent crackdown on popular unrest.

Turkey and Iran, the Middle East's two major non-Arab Muslim states, are vying for influence in the post-Arab Spring region and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's military adviser accused Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan of setting its foreign policy to please Washington.

Major-General Yahya Rahim-Safavi said earlier this week that any attack from Israel would trigger a response from Tehran's Hezbollah allies in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.

"The Zionists know well that if they start a war they will be targeted strongly from South Lebanon, from Hamas and also from Iran," he told state broadcaster IRIB.
