Beware Of Investing In Company Stock - Business Insider

AP

Many firms that seek to increase employee motivation and tenure are able to do so by rewarding their workers with shares of company stock.

This method of compensation can benefit both employees and employers in many respects; employees can get an extra measure of compensation that takes them beyond their regular paychecks, while employers can allow the open market to shoulder at least a portion of the cost.

Many firms encourage their employees to purchase stock inside their 401(k) or other qualified plans as well. But while this strategy does have a few advantages, it can also pose some substantial risks to employees, and these risks are not always explained adequately.

The ERISA Loophole
The Employee Retirement Income Security Act was created in an effort to create secure retirement for American workers. When Congress introduced this act in the early seventies, most major corporations and employers in America were all for it - on one condition. They told Congress that if they were not allowed to put their own stock in the company plan, then they would not offer any of the qualified plans created by the?Act in any capacity!

Needless to say, Congress quickly caved to their demands and allowed a "loophole" that permitted the purchase of "qualifying employer securities" inside an "eligible individual account" in qualified plans. This provision allows employers to push (or at least offer) their own stock to their employees while maintaining their "fiduciary" status that requires them to put their employees' financial interests before their own.

The Enron Factor
The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) published a brief in January of 2002 that showed that the total allocation of 401(k) plan assets in company stock had remained steady at just under 20% for the previous five years.

Its March 2008 publication stated, however, that by 2006 this percentage had dropped by almost half to about 11% with another 2010 publication giving a percentage of 9.2. The first drop was due largely to the financial meltdowns of Enron and Worldcom, where billions of dollars of assets in the employee pension plans were lost as a result of the company stock becoming worthless within a matter of weeks.

Needless to say, this fiasco quickly led to widespread criticism from both the media and securities regulators about the asset allocation practices that were encouraged by both companies. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 was one of several pieces of legislation designed to prevent this from repeating itself. Among the provisions of this act were stipulations prohibiting employers from restricting employees from selling their shares inside a qualified plan.

The National Center for Employee Ownership published a Statistical Profile of Employee Ownership on its website in February of 2012 showing that there are still about 800 401(k) plans and nearly 11,000 ESOP plans that invest either mostly or exclusively in company stock. Although the economic turbulence of the past several years has curtailed the purchase of company shares inside retirement plans, this practice has clearly continued.

Methods of Stock Purchase
401(k) plans and ESOPs are the two most common types of qualified plans in which company shares can be found. ESOPs are popular with closely-held businesses that use the plan as a means of transferring ownership (for this reason, the use of company stock in an ESOP plan is somewhat more understandable).

Some employers strongly encourage their workers to invest all of their contributions into company shares, while others will either refuse to match any contributions that are not used to buy company stock or else match employee contributions directly with company shares.?

Advantages of Purchasing Company Stock in Qualified Plans
Employers encourage the purchase of company stock in their retirement plans for several reasons. As mentioned in the introduction, they can benefit from improved employee motivation and longevity by aligning their employees' financial interests with the company.

They can also shore up their power base among the shareholders at large by placing more shares in the hands of workers who are likely to support at least the majority of the decisions made by the board of directors. Perhaps most importantly, they can also save money by making their matching contributions in the form of company shares instead of cash.

Employees can benefit by making tax-deductible purchases of company stock in their plans without having to enroll in a separate plan of any kind, such as an employee stock purchase plan or stock option plan. But the advantages to doing this for employees are often overshadowed by one of the most fundamental rules of asset allocation.

When You Don't Diversify
Any competent financial planner will tell his or her clients to avoid putting most or all of their eggs into one basket. Employees who funnel most or all of their retirement plan contributions into company stock can end up being seriously overweighted with this holding in their portfolios.

The employees at Enron, Worldcom, United Airlines and other firms that went bankrupt learned the consequences of this the hard way. Workers who invest in company stock need to realistically consider the possibility that their employers could go bankrupt at some point, and then assess the impact that this would have on their investment and retirement portfolios.

It can certainly be tempting to load up on company shares in many cases, especially if the company is doing well and the stock has outperformed the market over time. But factors such as governmental regulation, market forces and economic conditions can drastically alter the solvency of a company in some cases. An employee who has half of his or her liquid assets tied up in a company that goes bankrupt may have to work another five or 10 years to make up for this loss.

Example
Jody works in sales for XYZ Corporation. She makes $100,000 a year and contributes the maximum amount to her 401(k). ABC Corporation will match up to 50% of her 401(k) plan contributions with company stock. After 20 years at the company, she has accumulated nearly $250,000 worth of shares in the company and is starting to think about retirement.

The economy heads into a deep recession, however, and the stock price plummets by 80% in one year. Then ABC is unexpectedly forced to declare bankruptcy due to serious problems with its line of products. Jody will only have the remaining balance in her 401(k) plan plus whatever other savings that she has accumulated to live on during retirement.

The Bottom Line
Although there are some very real reasons why purchasing at least some company stock inside a retirement plan can be a good idea, employees should always start by obtaining some unbiased research on their stock, such as a detailed report from a third-party analyst.

A series of meetings with a qualified financial planner can also help an employee to determine his or her risk tolerance and investment objectives and provide insight as to how much company stock he or she should own, if any.

Companies that genuinely care about the welfare of their employees will often have resources available on this matter as well. For more information on this topic, consult your HR department or financial advisor.

Islamist jailed for inciting attack on US Embassy

EPA, file

Protesters flee after security forces fired tear gas towards them outside the U.S. Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia, on Sept. 14.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 8:19 a.m. ET: TUNIS, Tunisia - A leader of radical Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia was sentenced to one year in prison on Wednesday for inciting an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tunis last month in which four people were killed.

The conviction of Abu Ayub was the first in connection with the attack - launched to protest against an anti-Islamic film made in California. The United States has been urging authorities to jail those responsible.

"The judge decided to jail him on charges of inciting violence ... This decision is unfair ... we will go to appeal," said Rafik Ghak, a lawyer for Abu Ayub.

The authorities arrested 144 people, including two prominent leaders of Ansar al-Sharia after the embassy attack. Saif-Allah Benahssine, the leader of the group, has urged the government to release them.

Benahssine on Tuesday accused the country's government of being a puppet of the United States and un-Islamic.

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

The United States this month requested Tunisia bring the embassy attackers to trial, pledging to continue its support for the democratic transition in Tunisia.

Tunisia expects Washington to guarantee around a fifth of its $2.2-2.5 billion borrowing needs next year to help its economy recover from last year's revolution, the country's minister of international cooperation, Riadh Betaib, told Reuters last month.

'Easy to make and use': Tunisian magazine teaches kids how to make Molotov cocktails

Meanwhile, the Tunisian government confirmed Wednesday that it has arrested a 28-year-old Tunisian reportedly linked to the U.S. Consulate attack in Libya.

A man is being held by Tunisian authorities as a "person of interest" in the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

Tunisian Interior Ministry spokesman Tarrouch Khaled said that Ali Harzi was in custody in Tunis. Khaled told the The Associated Press "his case is in the hands of justice." He did not elaborate.

However, Harzi's lawyer told NBC News that his client was innocent. Oulad Ali Anwar said Harzi was working in Benghazi as a house painter at the time of the attack?and said he?denied both attending the demonstration at the U.S. Consulate?and belonging to any extremist group.

Rights group blasts 'repressive' crackdown in Tunisia, birthplace of the Arab Spring

In Washington, the State Department had no comment. Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the U.S. has been looking into the arrests of two Tunisian men being detained in Turkey reportedly in connection with attacks on a consulate in Libya last month.

Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans died in the attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in the Libyan city of Benghazi on Sept. 11.

State Department emails obtained by NBC News raise more questions about what was known by the White House regarding the Benghazi attack. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

NBC News' Charlene Gubash, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Obama?s Candid, Off-The-Record ?Latino? Remark Reveals Immigration Reform Barriers

lens2054263_1229291097democrat-vs-republicanObama was caught off-the-record revealing why courting Latino voters is a political priority and indicates why democrats have prioritized comprehensive immigration reform, often at the expense of high-skilled immigrants. "Since this is off the record, I will just be very blunt. Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community," he told the Iowa Des Moines register, while begging seeking their coveted endorsement in the swing state (The Register later publicized the transcript). Democratic favor for comprehensive immigration reform is well known, but the President's candid remarks reveal a brazen politicized motivation.

'Tattoo Nightmares': Woman's Tattoo Is Ruining Her Sex Life (VIDEO)

Michelle thought she'd fixed the problem of having an old crush's name tattooed on her lower back when she got it covered up with a dragon at the suggestion of her tattoo artist. But, as she revealed on the latest installment of "Tattoo Nightmares," the dragon was causing problems of its own with her husband.

"I notice that he covers my tattoo. I said, 'Next time we have sex, why don?t you move your hands?'" she explained to Big Gus at the tattoo shop. "He?s like, 'Your tattoo is just ugly.'"

"Man, Michelle?s a good-looking girl. And if a girl like that can?t get laid, that?s a definite tattoo nightmare," Big Gus marveled.

He hooked Michelle up with a flower tattoo approved by her husband, and it came out fantastic.

Iran: Oil exports may stop if sanctions tighten

US-led oil sanctions continue to injure Iran's economy, which depends on oil export revenue, but Tehran said Tuesday it was prepared to "run the country without any oil revenues."?

"We have prepared a plan to run the country without any oil revenues," ?said Iranian oil minister Rostam Qasemi. "So far to date we haven't had any serious problems, but if the sanctions were to be renewed we would go for Plan B," he added.

Qasemi also told reporters Iran would stop exporting oil if tighter sanctions were enforced.

"If sanctions intensify we will stop exporting oil," he said to reporters in Dubai, according to Reuters.

The US and other nations implemented crippling sanctions on the Islamic Republic in an effort to curb Iran's nuclear program, which Iran says is strictly energy related. The US and other countries suspect Iran of attempting to manufacture an atomic bomb.

The sanctions have decreased Iran's oil production, but it's impossible to know by how much.

After the US election, President Obama will have to decide if the US will grant waivers to countries that still consume Iranian oil.

Iran's oil minister also told reporters, "Right now, we not only don't import but we also export some products ... there are always customers for Iranian oil."

The deadline for new waivers is December.

C. diff infections becoming more common, severe in children and elderly

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Clostridium difficile infections are becoming more common and more severe in hospitalized children and the elderly, in large part due to greater use of antibiotics, Mayo Clinic researchers report in studies being presented at the American College of Gastroenterology annual meeting.

The bacterium, also known as C. difficile or C. diff, can cause an infection with symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. It is the most common cause of diarrhea in hospitals and is linked to 14,000 U.S. deaths each year.

The Mayo study analyzed five years of data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey and found that of an estimated 13.7 million hospitalized children, the 46,176 with C. diff infections had significantly longer hospital stays, more instances of colectomy (partial or total removal of the colon), increased admission to long or short-term care facilities, and higher risk of death.

"Despite increased awareness of C. difficile in children, and advancements in management and prevention, this remains a major problem in hospitalized children," says Sahil Khanna, M.B.B.S., a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist.

Elderly patients also have a greater risk of complications from C. difficile and dying from the infection. In a separate study of 1.3 million adult patients hospitalized with C. diff, patients over 65 were in the hospital longer, sent to nursing homes more frequently and had a greater risk of death. That suggests being over age 65 is an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes associated with the infection.

Researchers say increased use of antibiotics is a main reason for the increasing infection rates. When a person takes antibiotics, good bacteria or flora that protect against infection are destroyed. When these bacteria are destroyed, patients are vulnerable to C. difficile picked up from contaminated surfaces or spread from a health care provider's hands.

Treatments depend on the severity and number of times a patient has had a C. diff infection. Typically, physicians will treat it with the antibiotic metronidazole or oral vancomycin. For severe cases and patients with recurrent C. diff, fecal transplants are an option. Stool transplant restores healthy intestinal bacteria by placing donor stool in the colon.

Recurrent C. difficile is a majore problem with the risk of recurrence being 20 percent after a first infection and as much as 60 percent after multiple infections. People who have had C. difficile are twice as likely to get it again. Other known risk factors include proton-pump inhibitors for gastric reflux, immunosuppression, and long hospital stays.

It costs at least $1 billion annually to treat C. difficile infections.

Prevention measures include:

  • Washing hands frequently with soap and warm water in the event of a C. difficile outbreak; alcohol-based hand sanitizers may not destroy C. diff spores.
  • Patients hospitalized with C. difficile should have a private room or share a room with someone else who has it. Hospital staff and visitors should wear disposable gloves and gowns while in the room.
  • Thoroughly cleaning surfaces with a product that contains chlorine bleach.
  • Avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics.
  • When on antibiotics, take probiotics to help restore balance to the intestinal tract.

Obtain Solutions To Hearing Difficulties At WESTERNHEARING ...

There are many misconceptions behind bad hearing. Many individuals believe young people can?t suffer from hearing loss. Other individuals believe it?s only a part of getting older, that occurs on the latter stage of life. Do not fall into this trap, as your current pursuits might affect your potential to hear good. Don?t wait to feel discomfort within your ears before you learn to take care of your hearing. You can look at www.westernhearing.com.au for hearing gadgets which could aid your hearing problems.

No discomfort, no danger to hearing

Listening to loud songs could damage your hearing. You might not really pay attention to it, as you do not experience pain inside your ears. Your threshold for pain takes a hundred and twenty to one hundred forty decibels, whilst listening to a sound above eighty five decibels for 8 hrs can harm your hearing already. This is hard simply because you may not mind listening to loud audio until it affects your ears.

Common reason behind hearing problems is aging

The most common cause of hearing difficulties is exposure to loud sounds, not aging. You may damage your hearing at an early age if you keep hearing loud sounds. Be conscious when hearing loud songs, particularly on headphones or earphones, because you might exceed the proper quantity of decibels that might influence your hearing. Keep the quantity around eighty decibels, which is like the sound of the telephone dial tone.

Hearing loss is short term

Several cases of loss of hearing can become permanent. Your hearing problem can be long-term once you hear some form of ringing or even noise inside your ears after hearing loud sounds. Medicines as well as surgical procedures can only strengthen your hearing, but not bring it back to regular. Purchase hearing aids to relieve your problems and enable you to hear normal again.

Sound engineers are specialists to safe sound

You should realize that not merely because sound engineers deal with sounds makes them authorities in with safe sound. Most of them did not go through formal training with sound reinforcement and acoustics. Their position does not need qualifying exams and licenses to be sure the extent of sound they make is safe. Sound engineers level the audio by ear and won?t use level meters to check the sound intensity.

Advanced sound systems have extra protection

Sound machines with parameters to adjust sound in safe degree is helpful in preventing hearing problems. You have to have someone experienced with sounds to set it on a safe level, though. These systems produce sound with wonderful intensity, that?s dangerous for your hearing. There?s no built-in function for sound tools that would defend you from sound surges due to the feedback it generates.

Night clubs can damage your hearing
Not all clubs play sounds too loud since the group wishes to mingle more than enjoy music. There are clubs which are for public interaction instead of partying. These kinds of clubs play well balanced music so people may hear one another nicely when chatting. Be cautious when going to night clubs, as the sound may be too loud for own good. You can realize if the sound is too much once you cannot hear your very own words. You can find helpful devices to aid your hearing problems at www.westernhearing.com.au.

Looking for financial security? Temporary credit cards may be an ...

With billions of dollars in credit card fraud every year, shoppers may be looking for more secure ways of doing their business. One such way is to use ?temporary? credit card numbers.

They?re sometimes referred to as ?virtual? or ?disposable? numbers. They work in a variety of ways; while not foolproof, they may help consumers to head off abuse or misuse of their credit cards.

Most issuers of major credit cards will let you use a number (not the one on your plastic card) temporarily, often for just a single purchase. After that transaction is complete, the number becomes worthless to a thief or anyone else. The number is truly disposable, so even if a thief gets access to it, the number can?t be used for unauthorized purchases.

You use that number as you would your regular credit card, and your transactions show up on your regular credit card bill. Just as you save receipts from your regular credit card purchases, you should hang onto receipts from any temporary numbers you use.

Every issuer has its own rules for issuing temporary numbers; some tie the service to their online banking and may require you to sign up for it. Others offer a downloadable program that will pop up when you make an online purchase and ask if you want to use a virtual number. Still others require that you log onto their website when you want a virtual number.

What you should not do is click on anything in an unsolicited email offering you a temporary number. That?s likely a phishing scam, designed to harvest your personal information. Since the whole point is to keep that information away from the bad guys, don?t give it away to someone you don?t know. Also, when dealing online, make sure the websites you visit are the ones that truly match your intended destination, not some crook?s computer. Type in the address yourself, or use a bookmark if you?ve made one, rather than clicking on a look-alike link.

You also can request to use a disposable number more than once, and this is where things can get a bit tricky. Discover uses the term ?secure account numbers,? and they expire on the same date your regular card expires. Bank of America calls its service ?ShopSafe,? and its numbers expire after one year. Those types of temporary numbers are useful to people who want to use virtual numbers when they pay recurring charges.

Disposable numbers also can help prevent repeat charges that you don?t want. Say you sign up for a trial offer of some service at an introductory discount rate. Pay initially with a one-purchase number you?ve generated, and the vendor won?t be able to bill you automatically for a renewal.

The flip side of that issue concerns returns. A retailer who is unfamiliar with temporary numbers may hesitate to refund money on a number that?s no longer valid. A buyer heading into the holiday season might request that the temporary number be valid for two or three weeks into the new year, in case returns are necessary.

We?re told people who go through the process of credit repair often choose to use temporary numbers. The practice may give nervous consumers some reassurance, but they can?t defeat all fraud; as long as a disposable number is active, thieves might still make bogus charges with it. Some experts advise using only one-time numbers and that each number applies to a specific merchant.

Gadhafi anniversary marked with aide's capture

Libyan militias captured Moammar Gadhafi's former spokesman on Saturday, exactly a year after the dictator's death, while leader Mohammed Magarief said some areas of the country still needed to be fully "liberated".

While Libya was declared "liberated" a few days after Gadhafi's capture and its new rulers have led the nation to elections, they have struggled to impose their authority on a country awash with weapons.

Moussa Ibrahim, who was the mouthpiece of the Gadhafi regime during last year's war, was caught in the town of Tarhouna, 40 miles south of Tripoli.

"Moussa Ibrahim has been arrested by forces belonging to the Libyan government in the town of Tarhouna and he is being transferred to Tripoli to begin interrogation," a statement from the prime minister's office said.

The government has previously made false claims regarding the capture of Gaddafi loyalists, and produced no photographs on Saturday showing Ibrahim in detention.

His whereabouts have been unknown since the fall of the capital in August 2011. The government claimed to have caught him last October but he called Reuters to deny the report.

Fluent in English, Ibrahim would hold regular press conferences in the luxury Tripoli hotel were journalists stayed during last year's war.

Former revolutionary fighters have maintained Gadhafi loyalists have used the town of Bani Walid as a safe haven, protected by the large Warfala tribe which has historically been loyal to Gadhafi's tribe.

Speaking on Libyan television late on Friday about the insecurity still plaguing parts of the country, national congress leader Magarief singled out Bani Walid, some 100 miles south of Tripoli.

The former Gaddafi stronghold has seen deadly clashes in the last few days as the army struggles to impose order.

"The campaign to liberate the country has not been fully completed," Magarief said.

    1. Documents add to evidence of Libya security fears
    2. Hearings for accused 9-11 plotters make little headway
    3. Judge: Zimmerman can see Trayvon school records
    4. Afghan woman beheaded for refusing to become prostitute
    5. 12 unsolved murders may be tied to Manson family
    6. Syrian opposition skeptical of 'feeble' ceasefire plan
    7. Governments start scrutinizing credit card records

He cited "delays" in the formation of the army and police and the failure to disarm and integrate former rebels.

"This lack of care has led to the spread of chaos that has lured the old regime to infiltrate the country's institutions inside and to conspire with the regime loyalists on the outside," Magarief said.

"And the chaos has lured others to kidnappings, stealing, and to create non-legitimate prisons. What has happened in Bani Walid in the last few days falls under this ... it has become a safe haven for a large number of those who are outside of the law."

Militias, aligned with the Defense Ministry, have shelled the hilltop town of 70,000 for several days. A spokesman for the Bani Walid militia, Col. Salem al-Wa'er, said fighting started again on Saturday morning.

"Now with the capture of Ibrahim, our forces are beginning to cleanse Bani Walid from people still aligned with Gadhafi's regime," said Khaled al-Khafifi, deputy head of the February 17 brigade, Benghazi's largest militia.

Many other militia members are from the rival town of Misrata, which was enraged by the death of rebel fighter Omran Shaban after two months in detention in Bani Walid.

Shaban, from Misrata, was the man who found Gadhafi hiding in a drain pipe in Sirte on October 20, 2011.

Libya's congress ordered the Defense and Interior Ministries to find those responsible for abducting Shaban and suspected of torturing him to death. It gave Bani Walid a deadline to hand them over.

The army chief of staff said on Thursday the army was heading to the town to try and restore order.

"This is not targeting a region, a tribe, or unarmed civilians but outlawed men," Magarief said.

Tensions between Misrata and Bani Walid underscore the challenge Libya's new rulers face in reconciling groups with long-running grievances.

While Misrata spent weeks under siege by Gadhafi forces in last year's war, Bani Walid was one of the towns that remained loyal to Gadhafi longest.

It remains isolated from the rest of Libya and former rebels say it still harbors pockets of support for the old government.

Does Your Home' s Exterior Need a New Paint Job?

Last updated 3 hours 40 minutes ago

The next time you drive up to your house, take a close look at the paint. Has weathering taken a toll on it? In most cases, even a top-of-the-line paint job doesn?t last much longer than a decade. If you?re overdue for a new paint job, a qualified painting contractor can help. Here are some signs that indicate that your house could benefit from a lustrous new coat of paint:

The colors are looking dull. If your home?s exterior is beginning to look dull and washed-out, a fading paint job could be the culprit. This could be the perfect opportunity to try out a new shade for your home. Even if you like the current color, however, repainting your walls with a bright coat of new paint could be exactly what you need to revitalize the appearance of your home and make your neighbors envious.

You notice chalking on the walls. If your painted walls have developed a fine chalky residue, it?s a sign that your current coat of paint is nearing the end of its natural lifespan, and that the components of the paint are breaking down. This happens most frequently with cheap paint jobs, but weathering can accelerate the process.

The paint is beginning to peel. A high-quality coat of paint doesn?t just improve your home?s appearance; it also helps keep moisture out of the walls. When the paint starts to peel, moisture can infiltrate your wood and create the need for repairs. At this point, you should have a professional new paint job done as soon as possible to avoid potential damage to your walls.

When you need a painting contractor for your home, contact the experts at Superior Pro Home Improvement. Carmageddon for iOS Review - Video Games | Games Reviews - Digit

Videogames and controversy have always travelled hand-in-hand. And this relationship goes back to well before the days of GTA 3. As sage heads (all those above the age of thirty) will tell you, ?Much before GTA 3, there was Carmageddon.? The game was released in 1997 and became a runaway hit, delighting users with its simple interface and shocking conservative souls with its penchant for violence. You see, your success in the game depended not only on how fast you drove but also on the damage you inflicted on all who came (and even those who did not come) into your path. It was a bit like Road Rash meets Need for Speed, with a dollop of gore added for good measure.

And well, as in the case of many classic titles (we covered a few in an earlier article), Carmageddon too has made its way on to the mobile platform. It is currently available for iOS devices at a price of $ 1.99 and for this, you get the complete game in all its gory glory. Developers Stainless Games deserve a round for applause for not only bringing the entire game as we played it in the PC era to the iPad but also doing so without mucking up the controls too much. At 100 MB, it is not the heftiest download in app town either, especially when you compare it with the likes of The Bard?s Tale, Infinity Blade and Horn.

You can choose between two avatars - and they will bob and weave realistically as you wreak havoc.

For those who have been born in the nineties, Carmageddon is all about getting into your car and combining a disregard for speed limits with an even more reckless disregard for human life and property. You pick one of two avatars - Max Damage or Die Anna - and choose a car - you have a choice of two but unlock several others as you go along, or simply cough up $0.99 and unlock the lot barring a secret one. That done, choose a course to race on - once again, either unlock them as you go along or get all of them by crossing the developer?s palm with another 99 cents (in essence that means, you can get the game with just about everything up and running for about $3.96).

There are three difficulty levels to choose from - and if they do not reveal the nature of the game, then nothing will. We suggest starting with "normal everyday carnage"

With all that out of the way, it is time to step into the car and get really stuck into the game. You start off on a grid with other racers, although you do have the option of changing your position by just dragging and dropping your vehicle to what you think is its rightful place. That done, just wait for the racing to start and if you really want to be on the right track, start by running over the poor unfortunate who gets you started. After that, it is basically a strategy decision for you - you can either focus on winning the race or just wade into every vehicle and pedestrian that comes into your line of sight. And of course, you do not have all the time in the world to do this so get a move on.

Yes, you will have a proper road and course to drive on but you can always take a diversion, drive around and mow down some pedestrians.

All of which makes for a mixture of flabbergastingly fascinating fun. Yes, we cannot help but get affronted when our vehicles (with driver avatars realistically bobbing in a box) ram into hapless bystanders and pedestrians, complete with squishing sounds and blood-like goo flying out, but once you get into the game, you actually start working out whether it makes sense to take a bit of a diversion between one check point and the next to chase some people and run them down (ugh! How heartless that sounds), or whether it is just simpler to race along or plow your vehicle into the nearest competitor. Yes, this is definitely crash-boom-bang territory, complete with exploding cows and tight corners into which cars pile up and of course, precipices off which people can be pushed off.

You can execute some neat stunts too, although we warn you, you might not have too much idea of what you are doing. We certainly did not here.

The controls are a bit tough to start out with. They are located on the lower part of the screen and comprise an accelerate forward pedal shaped button and a reverse button on the right, and two direction buttons on the left (one for turning right, the other for turning left). Honestly, we did not find it the easiest as it involved keeping both of our hands on the device all the time and sometimes switching buttons can be a problem. However, once you get the hang of it, things tend to work out just dandy, and you can even indulge in the odd death-defying stunt by hitting the right combo of buttons (truth be told, we ended up executing most of them without knowing what we were doing).

There are plenty of exotically brutal courses to choose from. Unlock them one by one or just grab them all for 99 cents.

And that actually sums up the whole Carmageddon experience on the iPhone/iPod. It will leave you shocked and stunned, but will nevertheless keep you hooked. It is almost like playing an FPS, only instead of a weapon in your hands, you have a steering wheel. Many might be less than pleased at the quality of the graphics which seem out of place with those seen on newer racers like Asphalt and newer editions of NFS and might find the sound a bit on the tinny side, but all such reservations will vanish once you get behind the wheel and start wreaking havoc.

Morbid? Yes. Violent? Extremely. But Carmageddon also remains as addictive a gaming experience as ever. Definitely worth a download if you have nerves - and sensitivities - of steel.

Pink ribbons are special for Mikenzie | Cape May County Sports

Life was pretty good for Mikenzie Helphenstine in the summer of 2011. She had been an outstanding field hockey player at Ocean City High School (Mikenzie Custer) in the late 1990s, went on to play at Towson University and then coached a year at Johns Hopkins while obtaining her Master?s Degree.

She returned to her alma mater, teaching at the Intermediate School, coaching that school?s girls basketball team and getting involved as an assistant with the OCHS field hockey team.

Then she made a discovery. A visit to the doctor confirmed her worst concerns. She had breast cancer.

?I found out in August,? Helphenstine said, ?and had my surgery on Oct. 10. I was young and it happened so fast. I didn?t really have much time to think. I tried very hard to stay busy. It was what kept me going.?

Helphenstine didn?t talk to many people about her situation. Just family and close friends. ?That was the deal,? she said, ?I just didn?t talk about it. There was somebody in every school who knew what was happening and they would tell those who were interested. I just didn?t want to have to repeat the same story again and again.?

She obviously had this well organized.

?It was important that things remained as normal as possible,? she said, ?for my benefit as well as my family and the players on our hockey and basketball teams. My daughter, Andi, did the pink hair with the hockey team. I wore a pink necklace with ?Strength? on it. My son, Kyle, would point to it and I?d ask him, ?who gives me strength?? He would say, ?I do?.? Helphenstine?s husband, Clint, an Ocean City police officer, has been a major source of support.

In the 14 months since Helphenstine discovered she had cancer, she has only missed four or five weeks. Even on the days she received chemotherapy, she worked half a day.

?The school system was just great,? she said. ?The help I received was an example of the advantages of living in a small town. I was never alone. When I had chemo on Fridays we would make it Fun Friday for Andi and Kyle. People would call me up and volunteer to take them somewhere, do something with them, make their dinner, whatever. It was amazing.?

According to government statistics, breast cancer is the second most frequent cancer, just slightly behind prostate cancer. Both are very treatable if caught early through regular examinations. Breast cancer results in the third most deaths by cancer, well behind lung cancer and colon-rectal cancer.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and sports teams in Ocean City and throughout the country, from high schools right through the professional ranks, offer their support with fund raising and the wearing of pink. Some of Ocean City High School?s teams have already begun wearing pink and playing on fields decorated with pink ribbons. On Friday night, during its homecoming game, OCHS players and cheerleaders will wear some pink and Mike Lenhardt, the man responsible for the fields and recreation facilities in Ocean City, will paint some ribbons and pink lines on the field. Lenhardt lost his first wife, Gina, to breast cancer and has been a strong advocate to get Ocean City to support the cause.

?As I went through this,? Helphenstine said, ?I noticed that the kids were amazing. The teachers and parents were concerned and asked how I was feeling. The kids just treated me like they always did. When I lost my hair during chemo, the kids didn?t say a word. I think they were just happy to have their teacher or their coach back with them.?

Obviously, these displays of pink have a deeper effect on Helphenstine than the average person who has not had her experience.

?Actually, I lost a friend to bone cancer,? she said, ?and I have always participated in walks and other fund raisers as a tribute. Some of the kids on my freshmen field hockey team were also on the Intermediate school basketball team last year when I was going through everything. They went through it with me. When we started wearing pink at the beginning of the month, some of them would tear up around me.

?The support system in Ocean City was beyond my expectations. My sister?s godmother is a nun and she asked me to name some of the positive things about all this. It was surprisingly easy. You learn how strong you are. You learn how strong your friendships are. And you find new friends who become a permanent part of your life.

?I?m more than willing to share my story, to encourage people to get regular exams and report anything unusual. I want people to learn about the disease and get involved fighting for a cure. But there is one thing I feel very strongly about. Breast cancer was part of me but it does not define me.????? ?????

Tony Weeks believes fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather will happen ? Boxing News

Finally, there is a ray of hope for Mayweather and Pacquiao fans. Amidst confusions and doubts regarding whether the super-bout between Filipino eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao and American unbeaten fighter Floyd Mayweather, referee Tony Weeks? statement that the fight will happen, comes as a gesture of hope.

?Of course I want to see Pacquiao-Mayweather which is the fight everybody wants to see. It's like Ali-Frazier, Leonard-Hearns. You want to see those marquee match-ups where both fighters come in kind of even and you want to see who wins,? said Weeks, a widely respected referee.

According to Weeks, the showdown between Mayweather and Pacquiao would be ?great? for the sport itself.

When asked about Pacquiao?s biggest rival of all time Juan Manuel Marquez and his upcoming engagement with the Filipino once again, Weeks replied, ?All three fights were great. It?s a good match-up for Pacquiao and Marquez. Its one of those fights where you are just going to get that even-type action with both fighters going at it because they are world champions.?

Pacquiao is scheduled to face Marquez on December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It will be the fourth time both fighters will face each other. As history has it, Pacquiao has grabbed two wins over Marquez via unanimous and majority decision. Marquez stands with no wins as their first fight ended up in a draw.

Speculations of a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather have been around for three years now. However, every time both of them get close to a deal, it falls off. Earlier this year, both fighters were in direct contact with each other in order to decide the terms of the match but nothing worked out.

Now, there is hope that the super-bout will happen next year in April, according to Top Rank?s Bob Arum. However, there is no update from Mayweather?s camp regarding the same, which makes the case weaker. If the fight does not happen next year, chances are it will never happen, as both fighters are already towards their age of retirement. Therefore, next year is the last one probably for both them to come to a conclusion to this epic rivalry.?

Middle East peace: What would an Israeli entrepreneur do?

Erel Margalit, a leading Israeli venture capitalist, believes the moribund Israeli-Palestinian peace process could benefit from a bit of the high-tech industry's innovative outlook.

With yesterday?s announcement of early elections in Israel, many are saying that no one but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a real vision for the country.

Those who know Erel Margalit may beg to differ.

Mr. Margalit is not in politics ? yet. But as one of Israel?s most successful venture capitalists with a bent toward social entrepreneurship, he has not been shy about admitting his desire to effect broader change by jumping into the political fray.

?Politics in Israel today is a stagnant business,? he says, contrasting it with the kind of innovation that has made Israel?s high-tech industry second only to Silicon Valley. ?We need to take that level of innovation, daring, initiative, and working as a group into the political realm.?

Renovating the region

When visitors enter the headquarters of Margalit?s Jerusalem Venture Partners, they do not see Picassos or ancient Middle Eastern art.

Rather, there is a large picture of a derelict building that seems like it would be appealing only to stray cats. It bears no resemblance to the sleek, modern center it has become.

But Margalit had a vision for the derelict compound, which overlooks Jerusalem?s Old City walls. Today, it is home not only to his venture capital group but also to many of Israel?s most promising start-up companies, which each spend 18 months under the careful eye of Margalit and his team.

No one took him seriously when he proposed transforming the abandoned money-printing plant into a high-tech incubator, he says; he had to hire people to draw pictures of his proposed overhaul, which today boasts winding brick paths lined with vibrant flower beds.

?Right now, the Middle East looks like this [run-down building],? he says. ?But that doesn?t mean it can?t have some renovation.?

Harnessing Jerusalem's energy

While many people see Jerusalem as one of the most intractable issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with two peoples competing for a foothold in a city they both consider holy, Margalit sees that as an incredible asset.

That?s just one of the ways that he redefines the problem that needs to be solved, which opens the way for different solutions.

The Internet of Things will transform our everyday life, experts say

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? The next ICT revolution will have a profound impact on our lives and the economy. Ubiquitous computing and the Internet of Things are experiencing remarkable growth. The effects are becoming more and more apparent wherever you look: in housing, transport, health care, and retail, as well as the security and energy industries. VTT has developed key technologies for ubiquitous computing. These include situation awareness for portable devices, mixed and augmented reality, and interoperability solutions enabling devices made by different vendors to share information.

Information technology and electronics are becoming entwined with our everyday lives in industry, the service sector, transport, logistics, health care, housing, education, and our leisure time, almost without our noticing it..

The changes are already apparent to consumers in the energy sector, for example: remotely readable meters are rapidly becoming more common, enabling developments such as new pricing models that encourage the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. The remote control of machines and devices is experiencing substantial growth and spreading to smaller and smaller appliances. Smart buildings use building automation to control their own functions to an ever greater extent, and remote health care applications are increasing apace with the aging of the population.

"VTT is developing uID (universal Identification) technology with our Japanese partner, the University of Tokyo," says VTT Research Professor Heikki Ailisto. "This technology enables the identification and tracking of individual products, components, and food products. With uID, information on origin, manufacture, and history can be attached in the digital world to the most commonplace items over their entire life cycle. A timber plank, for instance, can be tagged with information on which forest the timber was cut from, where it was sawn, how many times it has been painted, and with what paints."

"Three big waves can be identified in telecommunications in the past century or so. First, the telephone connected 500 million places. The mobile phone then connected 5 billion people. The Internet of Things will connect 50 billion devices, machines, and objects. Objects and packages that do not require an actual data connection can also be named and connected to background systems with the help of identifiers," says Ailisto.

Objects converse with each other, mobile phones identify our movements

Ubiquitous computing (ubi) and the Internet of Things (IoT) will revolutionise technology and business. VTT sees an opportunity in this revolution; an opportunity that it wants to grasp together with the industry and other actors. The goal is to create a technological operating environment and to build business on it.

VTT has been developing ubiquitous computing applications and basic technology in the OPENS (Open Smart Spaces) programme. The programme's achievements include the implementation of the interoperability platform Smart M3, which enables various appliances and objects in the home or office to "converse," understand each other, and share information. This interoperability platform, created for devices produced by different manufacturers for a variety of purposes, is based on so-called semantic technology, which defines a common "language" for devices and applications. The interoperability of devices promotes energy saving, comfort, and safety at home and at work. The solution was developed together by VTT, industrial partners, and universities in various national and European projects.

One way to make appliances and services feel "smart" for the user is to make them situationally aware. Situation and location awareness has already been put into practice in mobile communications devices and other appliances. VTT has brought a new dimension to awareness with the solutions it has developed to enable additional recognition of the user's activities -- is the user sitting, walking, or running? -- and his or her method of travel -- is the user travelling by train, bus, car, or bicycle? In this way the user can be offered the most appropriate services for the situation.

One example of interaction technology between man and machine is mixed and augmented reality, an area in which VTT has achieved globally significant results. Such applications include motion sensing input devices and 3D cameras for games and practical applications. Mixed and augmented reality as an interface for mobile phones, for example, is just breaking into the market and entering consumer consciousness.

The worth of business related to IoT technology and applications is rising by 30% each year, and by next year will reach EUR 300 billion. VTT is helping Finnish companies reap their share of this growth. Research in the field is continuing strongly, with a particular focus on the Internet of Things.
